A donation and live voting experience for Australia's largest festival








Outline
- Melbournes Moomba festival is Australia's largest and longest running family festival - for over 40 years it has been enjoyed by over 2 million attendees each year.
- The most anticipated event in the annual 2 day festival program is the 'Birdman challenge' where volunteer teams in homemade costumes attempt to jump into the Yarra river to raise money for a chosen charity.
- The Birdman team who jumps the farthest wins additional cash contribution for their chosen charity provided by the City of Melbourne.
The Challenge
- Work with City of Melbourne's Moomba and digital teams to devise a new audience engagement experience to deliver an enhance attendee experience inline with Moomba's updated holistic engagement targets.
- To achieve this a real-time voting and donation experience was proposed that would help drive attendee digital engagement and increase donations for the period of the festival.
- Onboarding Birdman teams and related charity organisations into the system would allow them to promote their charity and monitor performance of voting in real time.
- Real time and accurate voting with safeguards to prevent gaming the system would becritical as it vote status was required for live broadcast at the event and in the media.
The Project
- Using a range of 'no code' and 'low code' tools created a progressive web app that was triggered by a QR code and URL displayed on festival signage.
- This web app allowed attendees to securely vote for their preferred Birdman team and donate to the teams specific charity.
- Votes and donation were authenticated by phone number to minimise any abuse of the system.
- Votes were collected and displayed in real time to allow teams, festival MC's and media partners to monitor and communicate progress.
The Outcome
- Over $100k in donations collected for various charities during the 48 hour voting window.
- Thousands of votes accurately recorded and transmitted to the festival big screen and national TV in real time.
- Very happy charities, festival organisers and Birdman teams!
