'Pay it forward' gift card microsites to support small business in lockdown

Outline
- Like Your Local! was a social impact project during the pandemic to support small business during lockdowns in Australia, New Zelaand and UK.
- Financial support would be in the form of 'Gift cards' that people could buy for local businesses - allowing small business to receive funds now and customers later when the gift cards were redeemed.
- 'Softer' support would be in the form a responsive microsite, linked from QR code posters and collateral to help local people support this business on social media and other means.
The Challenge
- Prior to the lockdown my cofounder and myself had been running a small ticketing and web app platform for the event industry
- With all events now postponed we decided to pivot our efforts to supporting our event venue customers and other small businesses with Like Your Local!
- We redesigned and redeployed our ticketing technology to become a 'gift card' solution at short notice to service Like Your Local!
The Project
- Created a 'Like your local!' brand, social and top level website
- Used webflow to create a microsite webpage for each small business signed up
- This microsite allowed the small business to sell gift cards, take tips, increase their social following and much more.
- Created a 'go to market strategy' to effectively share our mission
The Outcome
- For early users we approached small businesses such as music venues we had prior relationships with from our previous business.
- We attracted some national press in UK and AU with features on ABC radio and regional business support websites and news papers
- Thousands of gift cards were sold with proceeds going directly to small business
- Thousands of posters, stickers and decals were downloaded and displayed at locations in UK, AU and NZ.
- Like Your Local! was retired as the pandemic subsided
